Why We Call Them Better-than Cardboard Cutouts

Ask our past customers and you'll hear tens of thousands of people who will tell you that our life-size standups look freaking amazing. Often our bulk customers who buy standups from us initially do a test purchase with us and our competitors before placing a larger order and nearly every time, they come back to us for their orders because our quality is the best around and at a better price. But one thing stands out as being somewhat off. Our name - Cardboard Cutouts.

Our name can feel a bit odd when you consider that our custom standups are made not from cardboard but from a dense foam material known as foamcore. We still make our licensed cutouts from cardboard but all of our custom products are printed on high quality matte vinyl that we mount to foamcore. We made this decision over 10 years ago when we saw the difference in quality and customer experience.

Here are 5 clear reasons foamcore is better than cardboard for standups:

1. It just looks better
   Cardboard has corrugate flutes that show through the print and make a visually wavy texture. Because foamcore stays flat and crisp, foamcore gives standups sharper edges and a more polished, professional appearance.

2. Cleaner, smoother surface
   Foamcore provides a smooth, even surface that’s ideal for high-quality printing, mounting graphics, or clean marker lines—unlike cardboard’s visible corrugation.

3. Lightweight but strong
   Foamcore is very light while still being rigid, making standups easy to transport and set up without sacrificing stability.

4. Resists dents and creases
   Cardboard creases permanently when bent; foamcore is more resistant to accidental bumps and handling damage.

5. Longer lifespan for reuse
   Foamcore holds up better over time, making it a better choice for standups that will be reused at events, classrooms, or stores.
